Breast Screening

Breast screening is a program to promote optimal breast health and to detect and manage the many potential health issues involving the breast.  Most importantly, screening may detect breast cancer at an early stage, making successful treatment more likely.

A controversial U.S. Government Task Force report in 2009 generated a great deal of public confusion about breast screening programs.  However, most knowledgeable doctors strongly recommend screening and recognize its well defined benefits.

In general, women should continue Breast Self-Exam (BSE) monthly.  A woman should have a professional breast exam annually.  A woman should have an initial mammogram in her mid-thirties, and get regular mammograms starting at age 40.  The frequency is determined by a woman’s specific history and family profile.
